The home was built in 1888 by Dr. T. R. Meux who had come to Fresno from Tennessee the year before. The Meux family lived in the house until 1969. The Meux Home Museum recaptures the flavor of Victorian Fresno by presenting a middle-class residence furnished in the period, as a representative museum.

Shinzen Japanese Garden
The beautiful and serene 5-acre Shinzen Friendship Garden is located within Woodward Park adjacent to Freeway 41 in Fresno. In 1967 when the Park was being developed, the idea was proposed to create a Japanese garden complete with stone lanterns and a teahouse to be dedicated to Fresno's Sister City Kochi, Japan, as a symbol of friendship and international brotherhood, and for the promotion of cultural relations between the two cities.

Forestiere Underground Gardens
Like the name implies, these gardens are underground. Working alone during his spare time and using only hand tools, Baldasare Forestiere spent some 40 years sculpting an underground complex consisting of: a network of underground rooms, niches, courts, patios and passageways numbering almost 100, an underground garden home consisting of kitchen, nook, living room, 2 bedrooms, library, nath, fish pond, and aquarium, arches and stonework patterned after the catacombs of Ancient Rome, an auto tunnel running the length of the gardens (almost 800 feet long!), a Chapel and Chapel Garden. Baldasare adorned these areas with a unique variety of trees. Located on 5021 West Shaw Avenue in Fresno, it is just 4 miles and a half northwest from our property.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks
Sequoia National Park (Foothills Visitor Center, 559-565-3341) is famous for its large stands of trees. 4 of the 5 largest thrive in Giant Forest! Most of these Methuselahs are between 1,800 and 2,700 years old, about 250 feet tall, and close to 100 feet in circumference. Continuing on to adjacent Kings Canyon National Park (Cedar Grove Visitor Center, 559-565-3793), you pass through Grant Grove, site of the "Nation's Christmas Tree". Keep in mind that an automobile traveler gets only a small taste of these parks. If you have the time and inclination, get into the backcountry. From our hotel, follow the CA-99 south and CA-198 east, this is about 1 hour and a half from our property.
